Posted on April 24, 2017

PM EXPRESS can report exclusively how untimely death cut short a life time ambition of Senator Adetunji Isiaka Adeleke to have a shot of returning as the Governor of Osun State.

The first Executive Governor of Osun State, Adeleke had been nursing the ambition of contesting the gubernatorial election in the state which holds next year. He had to take the bull by the horns on Friday, 14 April only for death to come calling ten days later on Sunday, 23 April. He had on 14 April directed the leader of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ede South and Ede North Local Governments, Alhaji Sule Alao to call an emergency meeting of the stakeholders of the party in the two local councils.

At the meeting held at St. Peters Primary School were two House Assembly legislators, Hon. Akanbi Osun Agbeni (Ede North) and Hon. Nureni Adebisi (Ede South). Others are former local government chairmen,  Alhaji Kamoru Akinloye and Dr Salami, incumbent Executive Secretaries of the two local councils, Hon. Johnson Ojo (Ede South and Barrister Daudu  (Ede North), former state executive member of APC, Comrade Majeed Yahaya and some women leaders.

PM Express gathered that at the meeting, the late Senator Adeleke, fondly called Serubawon by his followers, begged the attendees to forgive him if he had, at one time or the other, wronged anybody. He seek for their brotherly love after which he told the gathering that the rumour of his governorship ambition was real, adding that he wanted to contest again during the poll taking place in 2018.

Sources at the meeting revealed that the declaration was greeting with loud ovations with speakers after one another pouring encomiums on the late Senator that the two local governments would work for the success of his ambition.

It was gathered that after he was endorsed by the APC leaders in both Ede South and North local councils at the meeting, a motion was moved by Comrade Yahaya that a steering committee should be formed to begin work immediately for the actualization of Adeleke’s governorship ambition and any other Ede’s indigene who wanted to contest election against an outsider.

This newspaper learnt that the motion of Comrade Yahaya was a surprised to the late Senator who commended him for making a useful contribution that would have stood a test of time.

The leader of the party in the local councils, Alhaji Alao  told the gathering that members of the steering committee would be made know during their next meeting, which as fate would have it, would not see the light of the day with the death of the Senator.

“This was a death that caught all of us by surprise,” Alhaji Alao told PM EXPRESS while reacting to the death of Adeleke during a telephone conversation.

“I spoke with him from Ibadan three days before his death. He did not look like somebody that will die in several years to come, only to be called on Sunday morning that he had died. Honesty, this was a big surprised to me. I believe Allah gives and takes at His own will.

“We were at the stakeholders’ meeting where he officially declared his ambition to contest in the governorship election next year. Everybody at the meeting was happy that we will be having someone from our community at the post again. It was so sad that his death happened this time,” said Alhaji Alao.

To Adetunji Tajudeen Ajagbe, immediate past House of Representative member, who represented Ede North/Ede South/ Egbedore/Ejigbo Constituency, the death of Senator Adeleke was a great loss not only to Ede community, but Osun State in general, adding that “it was hard to believe for me on Sunday. We attended the burial of grandmother of the leader of Osun West Senatorial District together at Kuta Ile Ogbo. He was hailed and healthy only to hear that he died the following day. This was an irreparable loss to us and it will be hard to see someone that will fill the vacuum he had left behind. It will take a very long time for Ede politics to get over his death.”

The late Senator, who died of heart attack due to overdose of pain killers according to the autopsy report, had since been buried at his country home in Ede on Monday.
