Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis: Top Seeds Battle Their Ways To Semi Finals

As the 17th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship gradually drawing to a close on Saturday, the coast is being cleared to determine where the pendulum will swing.

In the singles quarter finals played Thursday in different courts of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, it showed clearly that top players in both men’s and women’s singles are battle ready to lay claim to the top prizes and trophies at stake.

Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran, who is the number one male player had an easy ride over France’s Tom Jomby in straight set of 7-6, 6-0. The Indian now set up a semi final clash against Johan Sebastien Tatlot, the number 7 seed who upset 4th seed player, Turkish Ilkel Cem in tough match that ended 3-6,,6-4,6-2 while in the quarter finals match.

Swiss Conny Perrin, who lost out in the final of women’s singles last week is on course to the final this week as she beat her Mexican opponent, Ana Sofia Sanchez in straight set of 6-3,6-2. The 2016 champion will face Estelle Casino of France in Friday’s semi final. Cascino beat another ex champion, Tadeja Majeric from Slovakia in a tough duel that ended 6-3,1-6,7-5.

First leg winner in the women’s singles, Israeli Deniz khazaniuk is not given up as well, as she beat France player, Clothilde De Bernaedi 6-4,2-0 retired. The France player had to abandon the match due to intense heat which she could not bear. The Israeli will face Turkish Ayla Aksu in the semi final on Friday.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Karim-Mohamed Maamoun’s target on top prize brighten when he stopped Spanish Hugo Largo in an easy march with a straight set of 6-0, 6-0 result.
