How Kwesé Thrilled Over 2000 Sagamu Residents As Anthony Joshua Won His 20th KOs

Posted on October 30, 2017

Just as millions around the world watched as Anthony Joshua defended his WBA and IBF heavyweight title against Cameroonian-born French boxer, Carlos Takam and thus won his 20th undefeated fight last Saturday, it was the thousands of family and fans that watched the live broadcast in his hometown in Sagamu everyone can’t stop talking about.

The live broadcast aired on Kwesé Sports 1 Channel 300 and Kwesé Free Sports Channel 285 and at least 2000 people gathered at the dedicated viewing Centre inside Baba Josh Memorial Hall in Sagamu.

Earlier Saturday, the Sagamu Youth Association did a town storm to create awareness for the bout, which aired later that day.

This awareness led to hundreds of fans turning up at the location hours before Anthony Joshua’s fight.

When the match started screening live on Kwesé Channels, over 2000 people were gathered along the street, as the hall couldn’t contain the teeming crowd who were eager to see Anthony Joshua win.

Fans were particularly elated when he identified with his Nigerian roots by walking in the Boxing arena with Wizkid’s Ojuelegba playing in the background.

All points and jabs by Anthony Joshua were greeted with great cheers from the energetic crowd from round one up until round 10 when the fight was stopped by the referee.

By the time Joshua was declared winner, the crowd went berserk and rejoiced all through the streets.

The live screening was made possible by Kwesé, Nigeria‘s innovative and newest pay-tv, and the exclusive rights holder to the Anthony Joshua v Carlos Takam fight.

Ahead of the match, the Joshua family in Sagamu partnered with Kwesé to air the live broadcast at the Joshua family hall in Sagamu.

The fight coincided with Sagamu Day, an annual celebration of life by Sagamu residents where praise and rituals are offered to the gods of the land.

It’s the second time Kwese will bring an Anthony Joshua fight to audiences’ real time.

In April 2017, Kwesé broadcast the fight between the champion, Anthony Joshua and Ukrainian former professional boxer, Wladimir Kilischko on its pay-tv, free-to-air and mobile platforms.
