CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
Two siblings Ugochukwu Okoroafor and his sister, Oluchi have been arrested and charged before a Lagos court for allegedly burgling their landlord’s apartment through the ceiling and stealing the house rent paid to him by their parents.
The incident happened at Association Avenue in Akesan, Lagos where they lived with their parents.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the landlord, Victor Adewumi put pressure on their parents to pay him N180,000 rent arrears. It was learnt that when the pressure became unbearable, the parents went and borrowed N130,000 which the landlord reluctantly accepted, kept in the house and went to work.
When he returned from work, he saw that his ceiling was broken and his properties were scattered inside the room.
He then checked where he kept the money and his wife’s jewelries, and they were no longer there.
It was discovered that the suspects’ apartment ceiling was also broken which raised the suspicion that the suspects might have gained access through the ceiling.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the suspects were incidentally at home when others went to work.
They were apprehended and handed over to the police at Igando Division for interrogation.
At the police station, they denied involvement but admitted that they knew their parents paid the landlord their rent. They however did not explain how the ceiling to their apartment was broken and nothing was stolen from their house.
They were charged before Ejigbo Magistrates court for conspiracy and stealing under the Criminal Code.
They pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
They were remanded in prison custody pending when they will perfect their bail condition.
