Since the suspension of the monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise done on the last Saturdays of the month by the Lagos State Government, many parts of the state are now littered with waste even though the Waste Management team are working round the clock to contain the situation.

As a part of assisting the government, the Youth Corpers serving under the Ikeja Local Government mobilised themselves and formed a team – The Environmental Vanguard.

The team’s sole aim is to make sure that Ikeja and environs are kept clean during their period of service.
The Youth Corpers  said they were motivated by a slogan they picked from the Sole Administrator of Ikeja Local Government, Engr. Abiodun Taiwo, “Environment is everything, and everything is environment.” The slogan stuck with them and they swung into action.

The Environmental Vanguard dedicates every Monday of the week for cleanup exercise. The Sole Administrator aside providing logistics for the team to move around Ikeja, joins the team every Monday ably assisted by the health officials of the local government, to do the cleaning and pick up waste around the whole wards under the local government.

When PMExpress spoke with spokespersons for the team – Nwabuokei Michelle and Oguntayo Fisayo, they expressed their joy at being able to contribute their bit to the cleaning of the environment.

They said they were motivated further not just by the provision of logistics by the Sole Administrator but by the physical presence and participation of Engr. Abiodun Taiwo every Monday.
On his part, Engr. Taiwo encouraged corpers serving in other LGAs and LCDAs to do likewise for the health of all.

He said he is happy that the Community Intervention Projects are yielding results and affecting the communities.
