Two fake Neighbourhood Safety Agency officials have been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly trying to extort money from a private school owner over environmental sanitation before they were caught.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspects, Ogunrinde Olatunde, 46 and Disu Ganiyu were arrested at Kenisola Private School at Bashorun in Agege area of Lagos.

They were said to have claimed that they came from the Ministry of the Environment in Alausa, Ikeja, to inspect the school and were making demands for certain amount of money as settlement before it backfired.

The suspects were identified as fake Neighbourhood Safety officers before the management contacted the Police at the Commissioner of Police Special Squad in Ikeja. They were then arrested and detained at the Command for interrogation over their alleged claims.

During interrogation, they reportedly confessed not to be members of the Neighborhood Safety Agency but were  posing under the agency and the Ministry of the Environment to extort money from members of the public to take care of their families.

The Police found them culpable and consequently charged them before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence under the Criminal Laws of the State.

They pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since they pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the alleged offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, granted them bail with sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant were remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
