2 Men Arraigned For Battering Senior Police Officer While Performing Duty

An Assistant Superintendent of Police,  ASP Adebayo Akeem, attached to Shasha Division in Lagos State, had a nasty experience while performing his lawful duty as he was brutally attacked and seriously injured while trying to effect arrest. 

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that two of his attackers, Maja Tayo, 26 and Ogunbayode Olumide, 25, have been arrested and charged for allegedly battering Supol  Akeem while performing his lawful duty.

 

The incident happened on 3rd March, 2025, at Olukosi Shasha, Akowonjo area of Lagos.

 

According to the Police, the victim went to the area to perform his duty and he had an altercation with the suspects and others now at large. They grabbed, beat him mercilessly and injured him in the process.

 

The matter was reported to the Police at Shasha Division. The Police operatives mobilized other officers, arrested and eventually detained the suspects at the station for interrogation over their alleged conduct.

 

After interrogation, the Police found them culpable and consequently charged them before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.

The charges read:

COUNT It-“That you, Maja Tayo ‘m’, Ogunbayode Olumide ‘m’ and others now at large, on the 3rd March, 2025 at about 1230hrs at Olukosi Shasha, Akowonjo in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit serious assault on a Police officer performing his lawful duty and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

 

COUNT II:-” That you, Maja Tayo ‘m’, Ogunbayode Olumide ‘m’ and others now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial district, did assault one ASP Adebayo Akeem while performing his lawful duty and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

 

However, they pleaded not guilty.

 

The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since they pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the alleged offence.

 

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.A. Popoola, granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

 

The matter was adjourned till 31st March, 2025, for mention while the defendants were remanded in custody at correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
