Two women, Blessing Okon, 20 and Chinyere Uchenna, 35, have been arrested with suspected stolen 5-day old baby on their way to the Southeast to sell the baby to an undisclosed buyer as they were caught in Lagos State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspects were arrested at Maza Maza motor park by the Police intelligence team from the Lagos State Command, where they had boarded a bus going to the Southeast.
According to Police sources, the suspects were accosted by the Police intelligence, who suspected their movement, tried to ascertain the mother of the baby and they were unable to give satisfactory response.
They were immediately arrested and the baby rescued before they were transferred to the Gender Section of the Command for interrogation over their conduct.
During interrogation, the Police discovered that the suspects stole the baby from one Anthonia and Nkiru now at large with the criminal intent to deliver the baby to a buyer.
The suspects reportedly refused to disclose the name of the buyer or offer more information on the members of the syndicate said to be at large.
Having been found culpable, they were subsequently charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for conspiracy and stealing.
They pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, asked the Court to give a date for trial to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the alleged offence which brought them before the Court.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. E. Kubenije, granted them bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till 21st June, 2022, for mention while the Court ordered their remand in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
Meanwhile, the baby has been taken into the custody of the Lagos State welfare department pending when the mother of the baby will be found and the baby will be returned to her.
