Teachers in Ogun State have thrown their weight behind the governorship bid of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola otherwise known as Yayi.
The teachers under aegis of teachers unions in primary and post-primary education sectors such as Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Staff Union of Secondary Schools Staff (ASUSS), All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), OgunTeach Interns, Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), among others, unanimously announced the adoption and endorsement of Adeola as their preferred governorship candidate, at an interactive session with the senator, held at Ake Pavilion, Alake Palace Ground, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
In their respective remarks, chairmen of NUT, ASUSS, and ANCOPSS, Noah Sewakanu, Felix Agbesanwa and Alaba Olugbenle, hinged Yayi’s endorsement on his various intervention programmes in the education sector of the state.
They specifically noted that his payment of WAEC and JAMB fees of indigent students in the state, has enabled many students to write the terminal and qualifying exams.
Also, they observed that the bursary and scholarship awards he facilitated for students of tertiary Institutions have provided relief for both the students and their parents.
While promising that they would mobilize teachers across the state in support of Senator Adeola’s governorship aspiration, the teachers unions and associations, urged him to prioritize the welfare of teachers and prompt payment of their gratuities, when he emerges governor and assumes office next year.
Earlier in his address, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in the state, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, noted that the interactive session was an avenue for the teachers in the state to table their demands before the APC governorship candidate.
Arigbabu, who lauded the senator for being teacher-friendly, expressed optimism that the welfare of the teachers in the state will be given pride of place in the administration of the APC governorship candidate.
The Commissioner further assured the teachers that the next administration in the state will build on the solid foundation laid by Governor Dapo Abiodun, not only in the education sector but in every other sector in Ogun.
Responding, Adeola thanked the teachers for their show of love and support, declaring his acceptance of their endorsement.
He pledged to fully implement the National Teachers’ Policy (NTP) if elected governor of the state come 2027.
The Senator said the NTP aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and places education at the center of national transformation
He described teachers as the foundation of every nation’s development, noting that his personal and political accomplishments cannot be divorced from what he learnt under the tutelage of his teachers at the foundational primary and secondary levels.
He assured that his administration would implement the policy faithfully, while also building on the welfare strides of Governor Dapo Abiodun for teachers in the state.
Recalling his interventions in the last three and half years, the senator who is representing Ogun West senatorial district at the National Assembly, said he facilitated the construction of 128 12-classroom blocks with 56 staff rooms and 4 ultra-modern libraries across Ogun State.
He added that he provided furniture, 300,000 textbooks, and built 13 ICT Centres and eight Skills Acquisition Centres.
Adeola stated further that thousands of students and teachers were trained in ICT, with 12,250 laptops donated to students, teachers and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
“Over 12,000 scholarships and bursaries have also been given to Ogun undergraduates, while 102 mini-buses were donated for campus transportation.
“Also, I facilitated the payment of WASSCE fees for 2,137 indigent students in 2026, while I sponsored JAMB fees for over 15,000 candidates of Ogun origin over the years. I equally sponsored the bill that upgraded the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro to Federal University of Technology, Ilaro”, he stated.
The Senator stressed that his motivation is rooted in the belief that education is liberating, promising to continue supporting teachers as “the engine room for producing well-trained human resources” through adequate budgetary funding and special interventions.
