It seems shocking that the 28 tenants occupying blocks of flats in an estate located at Orisumbare in Shasha area of Lagos have fled their rented apartments over outrageous bills by the Ikeja Electric which they claimed was more than the rent they pay to their landlord.
The Estate is located at 100/110 Ejigbo Road in Orisumbare in Lagos suburb owned by a renowned medical consultant, Professor Achike Anamdi.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the tenants pay between N150,000 and N200,000 for each flat per annum while their electricity bills start from N300,000 and above for the same flat per year.
Thus they are complaining that their annual rent and electricity bill for each flat was between N450,000 and N500,000 in such remote area.
It was gathered that most of the flats were abandoned for three years now as no tenant wants to rent the place after becoming aware that each flat have accrued monthly bill estimated to be running into millions of naira which dwarfed the yearly rent.
When our correspondent visited the estate, many of those flats were vacant.
“Nobody wants to live there because once they hears of the arrears and those crazy bills, such tenants will quietly leave,” a neighbour living close to the estate said.
Speaking with P.M.EXPRESS, the landlord complained that the electricity company has destroyed his investment in real estate business after spending 40 years abroad and only returned home to invest in affordable homes for Nigerians.
Anamdi explained that the electricity company was still billing each flats despite that no tenant was living there in the past three years.
He said at the initial stage when he finished building the houses, all the flats were occupied until the electricity company started to bring terrible bills which make them to quit on their own.
He said he had tried everything he could to prevail on the electricity company to look into the matter but they never did.
Efforts to speak with the officials of Ikeja Electric for comments failed as the PRO number was switched off.
However, sources at the DISCOs office said the bill might have been accumulated due to estimated bills and non payment by the former tenants who occupied the flats.
On why the bill was still coming despite the fact that the estate management had informed them, he declined to make further comment and said it was the system.
Anamdi has threatened to go to court for the damages caused by the company.
