Former African champion and a member of the Local Organising Committee for the Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships, Falilat Ogunkoya has expressed great delight as the country is set to host the continent’s biggest Track and field event.
Ogunkoya, a multiple gold medallists at previous editions of the African Championships, said she is particularly happy with what Delta State has put in place to host the Asaba 2018 edition of the biennial championship.
“I am very happy to see Nigeria hosting Africa’s biggest athletics event again after a long time . The Delta State government has shown that they are willing and capable of staging a world class event and that is very commendable, ” she said.
Ogunkoya, who represented Nigeria at all major athletics competitions including the Olympic Games where she distinguished herself, stated that she is sure that the Asaba 2018 African senior Athletics Championships will leave a lasting impression on athletics in Africa and beyond.
“With what I have seen in terms of equipment and other logistics already in place, I have no doubt this will be the best African Championships ever organised, ” Ogunkoya submitted.
With the Stephen Keshi Stadium now virtually completed, the laying of titan tracks has commenced with experts from China supervising the exercise.
Already a Grand Prix has been fixed for July 18 to carry out a proper test run of all the facilities that would be used for Asaba 2018.
The 21st African Senior Athletics Championships, which is expected have over 52 countries in attendance, is billed to take place from August 1-5.
