LUCKY LAWAL
It was a black Monday for the people of Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State on November 19, 2018, as armed robbers stormed the local government in style to rob the only working bank, Access Bank, in the community.
The robbers were said to have entered Ijero town in an ambulance with a coffin in it and a Toyota Starlet car.
According to an eye witness, when the ambulance entered the town, the people were surprised as no family was expecting the corpse of any relation. The unknown strangers went straight to the police station at Ijemo Road and opened fire on the officers on duty. They killed three policemen and others who fled sustained several injuries.
After destabilising the police, they headed in a commando style to Ifaki Road, Ijero Roadabout very close to the paramount ruler, Ajero’s Palace where Access Bank is located to accomplish their mission.
According to eye witness report, they opened fire on innocent people on the road; they shot an old man on the chest and killed two men while others were hit by bullets on their legs, hands and body.
“It was observed that the guns they used were sophisticated and stored in the coffin that was in the ambulance. It was like a war zone as everybody ran for their lives” said a teacher who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
They were said to have gone straight to the bank which was closed for the day but workers were still rounding up within. They used either dynamite or bomb to blast the security door and gained entrance into the banking hall. They were said to have carted away some millions of Naira which had not been disclosed but did not hurt any of the bank staff other than the blast that wounded some of them.
The people are appealing to the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police and other Security agencies to look into the incident and fish out the culprits that perpetrated the devilish act.
