In recent days, Nnamdi Kanu, the fugitive leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has been the staple on the social media. The issue has centered around the narrative whether he’s alive or not —that was before he eventually surfaced through a live chat on a social media platform few days ago.
While the rumour of Kanu’s death was still gaining momentum, a group, which identified itself as Igbos in Nigeria Movement (INM), without evidence of the IPOB leader’s demise, issued a statement, condoling the family and friends of Kanu. This led to a crossfire between IPOB supporters and some other Igbo elite who have come to see both IPOB and Kanu, its leader as nuisance dragging their proud race in the mud.
This exchange further provoked the old questions as to why this class of Igbos detests Kanu, who claim to be fighting their cause.
Our reporter arrived at some answers and here are five of those reasons:
1: SCAM- Not a few highly exposed Igbos see Nnamdi Kanu and his IPOB as nothing but a scam. To these people, Kanu is just an hustler and they cannot rationalize why sophisticated Igbos could not expose the shenanigans of Kanu and his IPOB members. They wondered aloud how IPOB, through coercion, could be collecting ‘taxes’ openly from traders in the East and faces no challenge.
Aside that, some of these elite are worried about how IPOB has allegedly been deceiving some moneybags into parting with huge amounts of money to finance some illusory projects of the group, while there are reports alleging Kanu feasting on those monies to solve his personal issues. In fact, it has been said in a hushed tone that Kanu, in recent years, has allegedly acquired several properties in some South East cities with some of the proceeds.
These elite were peeved over Kanu’s claim that he wants an Utopian society but only doing the same things that others have done before him —no accountability. This action of his has been described as nothing but an elaborate scam.
2: VIOLENCE- There is no gainsaying that most members of IPOB are exuberant and violent. Their fuse is very short and are easily provocable —a little argument with a Kanu loyalist can lead to the victim being lynched. To some of these elite, the approach of some IPOB members has made it difficult for decent Igbos not wanting to be associated with them.
It is believed that Kanu himself has created an unsafe environment for Igbos in Nigeria and made it absolutely difficult for them to be taken seriously. Just as most Nigerians find it hard to differentiate between IPOB and the tribe Igbo.
3: BLACKMAIL- Recently, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Dave Umahi accused Nnamdi Kanu of being a deceiver. According to the Governor, Kanu is using his Biafra cause to defraud gullible Igbo people. Umahi’s allegation corroborates that of former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, who once described Kanu as a mad young man seeking relevance as a livelihood through a senseless agitation.
Indeed, Kanu has been busted severally for using cheap lies and blackmails against Federal and some State governments on social media to gain the empathy from some Igbos.
A prominent Igbo elite based in London once narrated some activities of Kanu prior to his becoming the first Chairman of the United Kingdom Chapter of APGA. She said not a few Igbos in the United Kingdom will forget so soon how Kanu’s lifestyle dramatically changed immediately he got the mandate to head APGA in London.
She also made reference to how Kanu’s IPOB allegedly once blackmailed some Igbos who are based in America, threatening them that they would not be allowed to come to the East if they did not pay some monies to IPOB.
4: HATE MESSAGES– It has also been established that most Igbo elite see Kanu as a fantastically dangerous personality. They are not comfortable with his predilection for hate messages seen as a serious issue that is capable of splitting the country through avoidable conflagration or war.
There’s a general assumption of some Nigerians that Igbo leaders are tacitly endorsing the hate speech by the IPOB through their reticence and despite their knowledge of dire experiences of civil war.
But to some elite, that is a misconception induced by IPOB’s unfortunate messages laced with divisive and uncouth words.
5: HERD MENTALITY- The greatest anger of many decent Igbos against Nnamdi Kanu is the herd mentality tendency he has unknowingly wrought on his army of youthful followers. Each time he makes all those speeches, his followers are pitifully hoodwinked. In fact, there is a belief that most IPOB members have almost fatalistic attitude even towards their own health.
More so, the tell tale signs of the herd mentality are obvious: ask some IPOB members a question, instead of admitting they do not know they will attack the inquisitor. A victim of such hostility once recalled his encounter in Port Harcourt with a commercial driver, who is an IPOB member.
The driver had tuned to Biafra FM, however, the passenger —obviously not comfortable but took it in his stride to bear the crude message while on the journey. The passenger however, observed some inaccuracies in the message and unlucky to had made his observation known to the driver. Rather than explaining to the passenger, the driver went ballistic but he tacitly calmed the IPOB symphatiser down till he get out of his taxi.
To this gentleman —also an Igbo from Kanu’s Abia State— this trait of hostility at every slightest provocation must have been a product of their wrong indoctrination through some of Kanu’s speeches.
But it is soothing that while Kanu’s supporters are easily sold of an imaginary Utopian tale of uniting Igbos, most of the highly sophisticated elite of the South East are not fooled by the fugitive’s sophistry.
They can decipher what is realistic from false narrative, and they are afraid that per chance the IPOB’s Biafran dream materializes, Kanu will invariably run his Biafra like a Taliban state.
And they never wish that to happen!

Another useless write up
If you like collect envelope and make rubbish publication that can't hold water, we know you people, as partner in Crim. we stand for truth and justice for all.even a little child knows that what we have as leaders are criminals in power without followers. Nnamdi kanu is the only one we know.
all the accusations by the Igbo elites are baseless and unfounded.igbos are the problems of themselves.i bet if they really have anyhing bad on kanu they would have used it to pull him down but they don't have.As far as I know the Igbo leaders presently are enjoying the currupt system of Nigeria at the same time neglecting the sufferings of their people.since the emergence of kanu it hasn't been business as usual for them.they want kanu to do things their own way and compromise the struggle.kanu speaks raw truth he might not be a perfect man as all men are,but we need people like this to change the cause of human history in this God forsaken country
Look at the rubbish you wasted ur time to write mumu but withing your heart u know the truth idoit
a candle light shinig to bright up the world.we are igbos we know the type of blood that runs in our veins.the clash between ipob and your so called igbo ellite is a mater of who is he from no where an aged london base to come and rule over us.every truthful person in nigeria will admit that all have not being right with the igbos in nigeria;ur so called igbo leaders have being there watching the suffering of their own people with out any atempt to attend to the cry of the hepless igbo masses.your so called igbo leaders are nothing but a groop of greedy men seeking only their poket and never care about their own people.but thank god for nnamdi kanu and his ipob groop;they are nothing else but the fire from heaven to consum the enemies of chukwu okike abiama who beseach the camp of the saint(the land of chukwu abiama)with their army.i am not suprise at the action of those you called igbo leaders and elders because is being written that at the end the elders will betrayed the young ones. and for your information nnamdi kanu and his ipob men need not to genttle, respectful,or even carefull because they are freedom fighters.a freedom fighter who claim to be genttle, respectful or careful is actually deceiving him self and as a result not feet for the strugle.what i see in nnamdi kanu and ipob is indeed what igbos need at this very critical age in the history of igbo existance on earth: and i believe their faith can not be consumed by what anybody say about them.so like i say mr poster your little candle light can not light up the world:so i think you put off your candle light and go to sleep.
Well like my colleagues said: Kanu is a freedom fighter, I want to ask you some questions Mr writer; 1. Are you a Nigerian? How do you feel about the situation of the country? How do you reckon the activities of your political leaders ? Have you made a comparison between Nigeria who claim to be giant of Africa and all other mushroom countries of Africa? Let us tell ourself a simple truth, if the leaders are leading with good examples, the led will have no choice than to follow accordingly. Talking about Nnamdi KANU , he might not be 100% perfect, but I see someone who can no longer contain the excessiveness, arrogance ,political idiocincracy, maladministration, all manner of tyranny ,name them. The Nigerian government is practicing the aforementioned approach in governance to the detriment of the masses and everyone is silent , we need more people like KANU to speek up to see if things will turn around. For our southeast elites; 'berds of the some feather will usually flock together ' Who amongst them is operating in a clean sheet? are you talking about our greedy governors , they will not support him because he will expose their annus, Unless you are not searching for the truth, otherwise you will see reason why they will not support him , but the day of reckoning is fast approaching when dick and harry will give account of his/her stewardship .
The Igbos are not fighting among them selves no we are united in this struggle let it be known that it's the elites in our midst which felt that there meets is about to be taking away from them that is fighting back using their usual method TOGS.
Honestly the writer is actually ignorant of what he writing about because I can assure you that 80% of igbos are in love of the gospel of liberation nnamdi kanu is preaching am not a member of ipob but what they are doing is cherished by average igboman
Mr. writer, I have seen your selfish grievances on kalu the position he occupied for the seek of poor igbo suffering which you fools are happy and castigating him,I know what you people are getting from your slave Masters, those you think that you are getting from them, one day will come they will snuff out, today see Orjiuzo Kalu where he was, another those you worship as God to you, will end you up like him.,see Innoson motors the battle he has with the government of so call Nigeria because he is an Igbo man, in federal appointment which position do Igbo man occupied, how many roads awarded in South East was completed, it's some body like you will be given the contact you abandoned it, reason why Kalu is agitating for Biafra republic, but now you are not seen those things that was happening to Igbos, Kalu knows the heart of Igbos and their problems, and only you know your own as a selfish human being, have you seen what is happening in Aso Rock death is visiting them so shall it be in Igbo land very soon to you all politician and the supporters of evil, depart from evil that you may not be a partaker of that.
