With the Bronze Label status given to the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon recently by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), runners who qualify for the one day event in Lagos will get automatic slot to take part in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
This much was revealed by the President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Engr. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau at the press conference to herald the 3rd Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in Lagos on Thursday. Gusau who was recently elected as the President of the AFN, disclosed that qualification for the Commonwealth Games is one of the benefits athletes participating in the event will get through the bronze label status.
The 2018 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will hold on Saturday, 10 February along dedicated and officially measured routes.
Gusau said the new board of the AFN is very grateful to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, Access Bank PLC and other sponsors for their support to the competition, adding that within two editions, the marathon event has gained world wide recognition, which has made runners all over the world looking forward to the date every year.
“The support is unprecedented and we are grateful for this. We could only ask for more. We will even be happy if we can be having more marathon races happening in Nigeria very soon.
“With expectations of about 100,000 participants (both elite, indigent and non-elite) we can be sure of a large turnout in the third edition, ” he said.
