Accidental Discharge: New Recruits To Undergo Psychiatrist Evaluation – DIG

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of training, DIG Emmanuel Inyang has assured Nigerians that only the best candidates will be recruited into the Nigerian Police Force. 

DIG Inyang on Wednesday at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos during an on the spot inspection of candidates to be  recruited into the force, revealed that issues bordering on criminality among officers and men of the Force and accidental discharge by policemen will no longer occur as the Force has contacted psychologists and psychiatrists to check the mental state of the candidates.

He said, “You can recall that on 7th February, 2018, it was published in the Nigerian newspapers that people that were qualified between the ages of 17 and 25 years of age, who were interested in becoming members of the Nigerian Police Force should apply online. Out of thousands of applications, 133,000 who successfully filled the form were to be screened. As I am talking to you now, the screening is going on all over the 36 states of the federation and
other DIGs are assisting me”

“A screening committee has been set up made up of officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force headed by a Commissioner of Police. Others in the committee are senior officials of the Nigerian Police Service Commission and senior officers of the federal character commission, while JAMB officials will conduct biometrics”

“We want to ensure that this is transparent and there is no victimisation of anybody. We want qualified
people because we want the best out of this number. I think that when we select 6,000 from 133,000 we will get the best. They will start from screening of documents for their qualifications, then they will check them physically to ensure that they don’t take anybody with deformity, squint eye or bad dentition. We are going to examine the eyes, the colour vision and general pathology, thereafter, we will contact the psychiatrists who will carry out
mental evaluation so that we don’t hear anything about accidental discharge”

“We will also carry out background checks to ensure we don’t recruit cultists, armed robbers and people with criminal tendencies into the Nigerian Police Force. The screening will last for a week” the DIG said.
