A 42-year company accountant, Akintomide Oyewole Akinjise and a female sales representative, Eunice Oluyinka Asogbon, 40, have been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly conspiring to steal company’s money to the tune of N7.3m.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Adelap Farms located at Akinyemi Street, Igando area of Lagos,
where the suspects were employed by the owner of the company, Mushafau Adedayo.
According to the Police, Mr. Akinjise, who was employed as an accountant, was alleged to have diverted the sum of N3.8m being the money their customer was supposed to pay into the company’s account but was diverted to his accounts with GTCO and Opay accounts numbers, 0027841096 and 8025266242 respectively.
In the same manner, Asogbon was employed as a sales representative of the company and she allegedly diverted N4.5m, which another customer was supposed to have paid into the company’s account. Rather she diverted the money to her accounts with the GTCO and Opay account numbers, 0052426266 and 8117672652 respectively.
The alleged fraud was exposed when the company conducted an internal audit and discovered that the suspects had diverted the money between October, 2022 and December, 2023 before it was discovered.
The management summoned the suspects to explain what happened to the missing money but they did not give satisfactory responses and the matter was reported to the Police Area M Idimu. Police operatives then arrested and detained them for interrogation.
The Police found them culpable after rounds of interrogation and consequently charged them before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for conspiracy and stealing, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
They pleaded not guilty when they were arranged.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since they pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu-Uthman, granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned till 24th April, 2024, for mention while the defendants were remanded in custody at the correctional centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
