The president of Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities of Nigeria (ACWCN), Comrade Bawo Ighomi has expressed deep concern over the health hazards implications of the recent explosion of a floating production, storage and off-loading (FPSO) vessel, which sank at the Ukpokti Terminus, Escavos, Wado City, Delta State.

The said vessel which carried over 50,000 barrel crude oil suddenly exploded and cut fire in the coastal and waterways communities environment, thereby destroying and polluting the marine environment, ecology and other means of livelihood of the people.

Comrade Ighomi then called on the Federal Government to do something fast, so as to prevent any pollution and epidemic on residents around the vicinity.

The ACWCN President, whose Association is to checkmate environmental pollution among other welfare issues concerning waterways communities in endangered vicinities, insisted that the Federal Government should lead relevant agencies like National Oil Spillage Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and Federal Ministry of Environment (FME) to act fast in ensuirng that the environment is devoid of health pollution for people living around and surviving on crops, fishing and animal farms in such environment.

“Disturbing reports reaching us indicate that this explosion has started to show signs of wrecking health havoc on both human and domestic animals, and if nothing is done soonest to remedy the threatening situation, it may degenerate faster than what somebody could think,” Ighomi submitted.

  • Thank you ACWCN, no doubt concious efforts by the Govrrnment should be made concerning the welfare of the Coastal and Waterways Communities in Nigeria. The Government should put an effective and active 'Body' in place that helps monitor and provide emergency relief for the people in cases like this and as well as a workable and veriafiable means of ensuring that all stakeholders do the needful.

Weldone, Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities of Nigeria and thank you Comrade Bawo Ighomi.
