Top seed Alex Adewale shrugged off a doughty performance by his perennial rival Wasiu Yusuf to emerge champion of the National Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.

The crowd at the centre court of the National Stadium, Surulere had a lot to cheer about in the men’s final which brought the three day tournament to a fitting climax.

At the end of the encounter, Alex had bettered his rival who once upon dominated the sport 7-5, 6-2.

In the female category, the story was different.

Third seed Nwazuru Chitura played the game of her life before toppling top seed Kafayat Omisore.

The women’s final produced more fireworks than the men’s game. At the end of the three hours encounter, Nwazuru had the last laugh prevailing over her opponent  6-4, 5-7, 10-8.

In his closing remarks, head of the Wheelchair Department of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Mr. Lateef Shodipo thanked the President of the  NTF, Mr. Dayo Akindoju for sponsoring the tournament.

Mr. Shodipo also called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports, corporate outfits and philanthropists to come to the aid of wheelchair tennis.

He boasted that Nigeria would rule the world of wheelchair tennis if his department got the necessary support because according to him “Nigeria is blessed with talents.

Ex international Jonathan Akpoborie and the Liaison Officer of the National Stadium, Miss Mboma. Cash prizes were  later presented to the winners by  Mboma and Akpoborie.
