The City of Lagos will once again be a centre of world attraction with the hosting of lady golfers from Africa in a tournament tagged West & Central Africa Challenge Trophy.
The competition, which is being organised by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria in conjunction with Lagos State Golf Association, will be sponsored by the Lagos State Government from 9-14 April, 2019 at the Ikeja Golf Club, Ikeja, Lagos.
P.M. EXPRESS reports that the tournament is a major vehicle to drive local and international tourism to Lagos as it would attract about 200 players and officials from 20 African countries that have confirmed participation at the event, even more are expected to compete at the prestigious sporting event.
The countries are Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana,Togo, Cameroun, Gabon, Benin, Gambia, Equatorial Guinea, Congo Brazaville, Sierra Leone, Congo DRC, Niger, Morocco, Chad, Egypt, Tunisia and the host country Nigeria.
Consultants, government officials and a large number of local and international spectators from Nigeria and participating countries as well as fans from all over the world will visit the shores of Lagos to be part of the golf challenge among African ladies.
Organisers of the event say the gains from hosting this event in Lagos cannot be over emphasised as staging this noble event is in-tandem with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s vision in making Lagos an all- year round sports hub and also bring top class international sports to the state.
It would aid development of Ladies Golf amongst participating countries across Africa. The championship would further encourage social networking amongst golfers in Africa while building their confidence level for positive representation at the global community;
The All Africa Challenge Trophy is one of the main international championship in Africa for golf.
The West & Central Africa Challenge Trophy was established as a biennial event in Harare, Zimbabwe at Chapman Golf Club in May 1992 with 12 participating countries.
The event was to be run by the organizing committee of the host country, assisted and overseen by the Regional Trustees; who ensure that the guiding principles are adhered to and that participation in the event continually expands.
The West & Central Africa Challenge Trophy that was last held by Tunisia in 2016 has also been held in several African countries in the past 37 years and Nigeria would not be an exception with individual trophy won by Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire.
