Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Deji Tinubu says the state has continued to maintain its status as number one sports destination in Nigerian since Governor Akinwunmi Ambode assumed power in 2015 and the achievements the state recorded in the last one year are even unprecedented.

Tinubu, who is also the Special Adviser on Sports to the Governor, while rendering the stewards of the Commission to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor Ambode recently ,said that in the last one year, over 90 sports events were staged and hosted in Lagos to ensure that the athletes were busy throughout the year.

“Our sports facilities were opened to regular usage. We also engaged more schools in organised sports and create a standardized schools sports calendar. We created database for gifted secondary school athletes in basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, wrestling, table tennis, and taekwondo. The reason  for this is for us to have a core of the state’s sports future. We planned to have standing teams for each sports so that we can assemble them within a short time when we have competition.

“Our focus was also directed at identifying next generation of elite athletes for further development, while we also created statewide competitions with private sector backing. In the last one year, we tried as much as possible to increased international partnership in hosting world class events such as the 2nd Beach Soccer Nations Cup, which was staged at the Eko Atlantic City, FCB Escola Lagos, the first FC Barcelona Academy established in Africa, Rugby championship with the Friends of Rugby,

“In private sector partnership, we have the Heritage Bank sponsored  Skoolimpics, Best Games Monopoly, the first Criterium races with the Cycology Group.

“On human capacity development, we sent 12 members of staff of the commission on the 3rd International Olympic Committee (IOC)/Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Advanced Sports Management Course. Our marketing department attended the “Essentials of Marketing” course at Lagos Business School, while research is ongoing for more relevant courses to mobilise the skills of a significant higher number of staff,” Tinubu said.
