The ancient Umuchu town in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State is in mourning mood following the passing of one of its illustrious sons, Ozo Celestine Ekwem, popularly known in media circles as Evans Ekwem.
The veteran journalist and community leader retired from active service five years ago after decades of dedicated work in education and the media. He later served as the Anambra State Correspondent for http://pmexpressng.com until ill health forced him to step down.
Born and raised in Ibughubu, Umuchu, Ozo Ekwem was more than a reporter. He was a teacher, a title holder, a devoted Catholic, and a pillar of community development. In the 1980s, he taught at Boys High School, Umuchu, where he mentored many young minds before answering the call to journalism.
His byline, Evans Ekwem, became a familiar name to readers across Anambra. For years he chronicled the stories of his people with honesty, depth, and a deep love for his hometown. Colleagues at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council, described him as diligent, humble, and passionate about truth. NUJ Anambra says it will sorely miss his wisdom and his presence in the press community.
Ozo Ekwem also served with distinction in government. During the administration of Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, he was conferred with the position of Igwe Press of NUJ by the Anambra State Government, a recognition of his contributions to media practice and public information in the state.
Beyond journalism, Ozo Ekwem gave his life to the service of Umuchu. In Ibughubu village, he held different leadership positions and was instrumental in projects that advanced the welfare of his people. His commitment to communal progress earned him the prestigious traditional title of Nze na Ozo in Umuchu, a mark of integrity and service.
A devout Catholic, Ozo Ekwem lived his faith openly. He was known for his quiet generosity, his counsel to youths, and his consistent presence in church activities. To many, he embodied the values of truth, service, and faith that he wrote about and lived by.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mrs. Margaret Ekwem, and many children who he nurtured with the same care he gave to his community and his profession. Family members described him as a peacemaker and a man who put others first.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, students, traditional rulers, and community leaders who remember him as a man of principle who never used his pen to hurt, but to build.
The Igwe-in-Council of Umuchu and various town unions have expressed shock at his passing, noting that the community has lost a voice that spoke for the voiceless and a leader who worked tirelessly for development.
As at press time, the family has not yet announced the date for his burial. Arrangements are ongoing for a befitting farewell for a man who served God, his community, and his profession with distinction.
