Super Falcons and Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala recently paid a courtesy visit to the Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Oluwatoyin Gafar Bolowotan and staff of the Commission at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.
The former African women footballer award winner expressed excitement meeting with the Director General who she has known a long time ago.
“I am really excited meeting with the new Director General, I think when I was growing up, Mr. Gafar was the hope, he gave hope for a lot of footballers. He used to finance and own a football academy in Lagos, Bolowotan FC and the team produced a lot of football stars for the national teams. If I were to be a male footballer then, I would have played for him, but now that he is the Director General of the Sports Commission, I am really happy that his vision and the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is to make Lagos State Africa’s sports hub,” Oshoala said.
According to her, the Director General, who just assumed office, has given Lagos sports a new face in the area of youth development as more events have been organised.
Oshoala told Gafar of her pet project, Asisat Oshoala Foundation, which has been her own way of giving back to the society. The foundation has in the past five years organising an international football clinic and tournament for young school girls in Lagos.
P.M. EXPRESS reports that the Asisat Oshoala African Football for Girls, Championship, which 5th edition will be held in December this year, will have as its theme: “playing for the next generation in Lagos”.
It was gathered that Oshoala will be bringing top coaches from Spain to mentor participants at the events and teach them the basics of football.
Over 5,000 girls, comprise students of Lagos State secondary schools, university students both in Nigeria and outside the country, are expected to take part in this year’s edition.
