A 28-year-old lady, Blessing Edwin, was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court in Lagos State on June 11, 2026. The case stems from allegations of online publications made against one Princess Onyeneke. The charge is recorded as Charge No. 17202.
According to the document filed by the Commissioner of Police, the alleged incident occurred on June 9, 2026, at about 10:00hrs, at Liberty Estate, Ikotun, Lagos. The document named Princess Onyeneke as the complainant. It is an allegation at this stage and not a determination of guilt.
Count 1 alleged that Blessing Edwin, with intent to cause fear and alarm, published a statement to the public online telling people to avoid Princess Onyeneke and describing her as a “fraudster”. The prosecution stated it has reason to believe the statement was false. The charge referenced Section 39(1) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015. That provision generally relates to publishing statements believed to be false and likely to cause fear or alarm to another person. The charge says the conduct is punishable under that section.
Count II alleged that on the same date, time, and place, Blessing Edwin provoked a breach of peace through an “offensive publication”. The charge stated that rumours were circulated calling Princess Onyeneke a fraudster, and that the accused knew this could cause disaffection. Count II is brought under Section 57 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015, which typically deals with acts said to provoke a breach of public peace. The document recorded the state’s position; the court will decide what is proven.
The charge sheet had the name CSP Sadiku Afolabi Ibrahim and was signed by a Police officer named Emmanuel. The prosecuting counsel was named as Simon Njue, and the Police officer listed was ASP Adeosun Simeon. The station of recorded was Ikotun Police Station.
In Court, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, SP Simon Njue, asked the court for a hearing date to enable the Police to present evidence to prove the allegations. The Presiding Magistrate, Miss F.R. Ogunkoyede, granted her bail in the sum of ₦250,000 with two sureties in like sum. The court ordered that the sureties must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The matter was adjourned for mention. Pending perfection of bail, the defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri Town, Lagos according to the record.
Cases involving online or website publications commonly focus on three questions: What exactly was published? Was it circulated to a public audience? And did it meet the legal elements of intent or effect alleged under the law? Both defence and prosecution are expected to present witnesses and digital evidence from June 9, 2026.
Because the plea is “Not Guilty,” the case will proceed to trial or further hearings. Under Nigerian law, Blessing Edwin is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The charge reflects the state’s allegations at this stage, and the final outcome will rest with the Magistrate after due process.
