Football data website, SofaScore, has named Bruno Fernandes as the best player at the World Cup.

Fernandes’ average rating ranked highest at the 2022 tournament, above Lionel Messi, who was in second place.

This was despite Messi leading Argentina to winning the World Cup, and France’s Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick in the final.

Fernandes’ Portugal were knocked out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals by surprise package Morocco.

SofaScore gave Fernandes the top player rating of 8.38/10 for his performances in Qatar. This was the highest of any player at the tournament.

Fernandes’ 8.38 was narrowly higher than Lionel Messi’s 8.27, despite the Argentine scoring in every single knockout round.

Kylian Mbappe rated at 7.61 in seventh, below Ghana’s Mohamed Kudus in fifth with 7.70.

Two more Manchester United players feature in the top 12, with Brazil’s Casemiro at 7.50 and Portugal’s Diogo Dalot on 7.47.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka was the only other Premier League player to make the top 12, and the only England star, with 7.60.

Cristiano Ronaldo meanwhile ranked a lowly 556th of all players at the tournament with an average rating of 6.46.

Fernandes scored two goals at the tournament and provided three assists.

However, it was Lionel Messi who won the Golden Ball along with the World Cup itself, while Kylian Mbappe bagged the Golden Boot, with eight goals.

Fernandes can hold his head high, even though the sour nature of Portugal’s elimination will take the shine off his satisfaction with his own performance.
