President Muhammadu Buhari has come out heavily on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) describing the Mahmood Yakubu-led electoral body as “incompetent” and “inefficient” for postponing the 16 February Presidential and National Election six hour to the poll.
Buhari read the riot act to the INEC Monday while speaking at an emergency caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.
While reprimanding the INEC, the president said: “INEC had all the time and resources, didn’t have to wait six hours to the elections to announced postponement,” he said.
“INEC must explain to Nigerians what happened, the constitution and the law protects INEC but they must not take us for granted.”
On those who planned to snatch ballot boxes and caused mayhem during the election on Saturday, Buhari warned that they should do that at their own peril, adding that he is a popular candidate who does not need rigging to win the election.
““I will never use my powers to rig election. I don’t need to. I won’t disrespect Nigerians. We want a process that will allow Nigerians to choose freely. I have gone round the country, with what I saw, I have no reason to rig. INEC must behave responsibly and realize that they’re not the only stakeholders, the military and the police will be well mobilized to stamp out rigging and thuggery, any state or group of people who think they can disrupt this process will do so at the risk of their own lives.”
