Members of the cabal hawking chieftaincy titles in Umuchu town, Aguata Local Government area of Anambra State, suffered a set back after collecting N380,000 for both the title and drinks from about 25 indigenes for various titles slated for 30th December, 2024 and it backfired.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Anambra State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs put an embargo and directed that no chieftaincy title should be awarded in Umuchu town on the said date.
The members of the cabal had perfected plans to give the titles in anticipation for the contest for Igwe Umuchu position if anything happens to the present Igwe Umuchu, whose wife passed on and her corpse is still in the mortuary, who is slated for burial in February, 2025.
While the Igwe Umuchu, HRH Gody Ezechukwu, was preparing for the wife’s burial, some set of people led by top Nze na Ozo title holder eyeing the Igweship, collected the paltry sum for the chieftaincy titles.
P.M.EXPRESS findings revealed that it was Hon. Akwaeke that first hinted of the clandestine move to give over 25 indigenes the various chieftaincy titles after the members of the cabal had collected the money.
Some of the Indigenes thought that it will not be possible because the wife of the Igwe had passed on and has not been buried. But later it became clear that members of the group were adamant and have decided to give the titles unprecedented in the history of Umuchu traditional title giving.
An indigene, Engr Samuel Ezekwo also raised alarm and stated the following:
“My dear fellow Umuchu citizens,
“(1.) It has become increasingly apparent that an abomination and pervasion of sacrilege in our tradition and culture are unfolding before our eyes.
(2.) People are discussing and planning on who and how to succeed our beloved Igwe Godson Ezechukwu OON when he is still alive.
(3.) Recently, as his deceased beloved wife, Mother General, First Lady of Umuchu, who hails from storied pioneer Emenike family, is in the mortuary, plans are being made to confer chieftaincy titles on over 25 recipients.
(4.) The unprecedented hurried conferment of over 25 chiefs is an evil design to stack the cabinet chiefs and Ichies with people who would vote for an unqualified person to become Igwe Umuchu.
(5.) Our beloved Igwe has never conferred more than four (4) chiefs at an annual Ofala. So the hurry to confer 25 chiefs must be based on evil thought that our Igwe will not be with us long enough for the current recipients to become chiefs during his reign.
(6.) It will take seven (7) ofalas to confer 25 new chiefs so they can’t wait.
(7.) This single sinister and abominable thought disqualifies the culprits from chieftaincy and any leadership positions in Umuchu.
(8.) Our Igwe conferred NONE (zero) or one (1) chief in some Ofala ceremonies during his over 20 years reign. So what is the hurry at this time? Why must over 25 recipients be conferred chiefs now?
(9.) One can only draw two conclusions, (i) THIS IS PART OF A GRAND PLAN TO EFFECTIVELY RIG FUTURE IGWESHIP ELECTION, (ii) our beloved Igwe was not part of the decision to select the 25 chieftaincy candidates. It is not in his character.
(10.) These acts and thoughts are mind-blowing and outright abominations that must be condemned by all peace loving citizens of Umuchu.”
However,  the letter from the Anambra State Government has indeed confirmed that there were plans to give the chieftaincy titles and has warned the members of the cabal not to do so and directed that no Ofalla festival should be conducted in Umuchu town now that the late Igwe’s wife is still in the mortuary.
The letter was addressed to the President General of Umuchu town and signed by the permanent secretary,  Dr Nwabufo Nwankwo, on behalf of the Commissioner and copied to the traditional ruler of Umuchu town, Anambra State Commissioner of Police,  DSS, Mayor, Aguata Local Government, Special adviser on security, Area Commander and others.
