PAUL NWOSU

At 70, Chief Sir Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano, Akpokuedike Aguleri, stands tall, not just by the grace of age, but by the depth of his achievements and the boldness of his legacy. A man whose life has been shaped by grit, grace, and God’s guidance, his journey from the quiet town of Aguleri to the exalted corridors of power is a compelling story of vision, excellence, and service.

Born on August 8, 1955, Obiano’s destiny was hinted early on through his brilliance and discipline. At Christ the King’s College, Onitsha, he emerged as one of the rare few to score a Grade One in the West African School Certificate Examination, an extraordinary feat in his time. By 1974, his flair for ideas and intellect earned him the prestigious John F. Kennedy Essay Prize.

He pursued Accounting at the University of Lagos, graduating with a Second-Class Upper in 1979. His academic thirst remained unquenched. He returned to bag an MBA in Marketing in 1993. By 1990, he had become an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ACA) and earned his stripes as a Fellow (FCA) by 2001.

Professionally, Obiano’s rise was meteoric. From First Bank of Nigeria in 1981 to Chevron Texaco Nigeria, where he served as Chief Internal Auditor, he built a formidable résumé of integrity and competence. But it was in the banking sector that he truly carved his niche. In 1991, he joined Fidelity Bank and by 2003, he had become Executive Director for Business Banking, the second-in-command in the institution. For 12 years, he steered the bank’s engine room, shaping its strategic direction, and left in 2012 with a legacy of excellence.

But public service beckoned, and he embraced it as a new mission.

On March 17, 2014, Chief Willie Obiano was sworn in as the 5th democratically elected Governor of Anambra State. With the calm confidence of a technocrat and the strategic mind of a banker, he unveiled the *Anambra Wheel of Development* , a visionary blueprint anchored on four strong pillars and enablers that would serve as the framework for inclusive growth, sustainable infrastructure, and human development.

Obiano governed with precision. His administration was defined by clarity of purpose, transparency, and measurable deliverables. He was not just a governor who made promises, he was one who delivered. And not in trickles, but in torrents.

In the span of eight transformative years, Chief Willie Obiano built a legacy anchored on over 100 strong and verifiable achievements across multiple sectors.

From grassroots development to bold mega-projects, Chief Obiano’s tenure remains a benchmark in subnational governance in Nigeria. He did not merely hold office, he changed the game.

As Chief Sir Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano turns 70, we salute a man who has lived up to the divine wisdom of his middle name, “Maduaburochukwu” (man is not God), a humble reminder that his achievements are anchored in divine providence and unwavering dedication to the Almighty.

Today, his family beams with pride,
Anambra echoes his strides,
Nigeria lifts a toast in salute,
As history write his name in gold.

Happy 70th Birthday to a visionary, a statesman, and a leader of uncommon distinction.
