JOY UNLIMITED: Players of Fortune Football Academy celebrate their victory after winning the 7th JOF U-13 Cup at the UNILAG Sports Centre, Akoka, Lagos on Sunday

The rain came down relentlessly over the University of Lagos Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon, turning the football pitch into a slippery, waterlogged battleground. Yet, for the young boys contesting the final of the seventh edition of the JOF U-13 Cup Football Tournament, the weather was little more than another obstacle standing between them and their dreams.

Every pass, tackle and sprint through the soaked surface carried a deeper meaning. This was more than a football match. It was the culmination of months of sacrifice, discipline and hope for dozens of young players who had spent the past several months chasing an opportunity that could shape their futures.

When the final whistle blew after a tense goalless encounter, Fortune Football Academy of Oshodi and FC VI-Foot Football Academy of Ijora still could not be separated. It took a dramatic penalty shootout to decide the champions, with Fortune FA emerging victorious 3-1 to lift the coveted trophy before jubilant teammates, coaches and supporters.

For the champions, it was a reward for months of hard work. For the runners-up, it was a reminder that success is often measured not only by trophies but also by the journey. And for JOF Nigeria Limited, the tournament’s sponsor, it represented another successful chapter in a vision that stretches far beyond the final score.

The seventh edition once again demonstrated why grassroots football remains the lifeblood of Nigerian football. Long before packed stadiums, television cameras and lucrative professional contracts, every football star begins on community pitches where dreams are born and character is built.

Recognising this reality, JOF Nigeria Limited has continued to invest in one of the country’s most important football development initiatives, creating a platform where talented youngsters can compete in an organised environment while learning the values of discipline, teamwork and resilience.

The rewards reflected that commitment. Champions Fortune FA received ₦750,000, while FC VI-Foot earned ₦500,000 as runners-up. Soccer City Football Academy claimed third place after defeating Ultimate Football Academy 1-0 to receive ₦350,000, while Ultimate FA also left with ₦250,000.

Beyond the team prizes, individual brilliance was celebrated. Okoroma Destiny of FC VI-Foot finished as the tournament’s highest goal scorer, Fortune FA’s Odesola Odunayo was named the Most Valuable Player, while teammate Alabi Faruk claimed the Best Goalkeeper award after producing a series of outstanding performances throughout the competition.

For Chairman of JOF Nigeria Limited, Mr. Segun Olugboyegun, the success of the tournament is measured not merely by the winners but by the opportunities it creates for young Nigerians.

“Our young footballers can become world champions someday,” he said. “The JOF U-13 Cup is our investment in that future. By providing a structured and competitive environment, we are giving these children the platform to develop their talents, build confidence and prepare for greater opportunities.”

His words reflect a growing understanding that corporate social responsibility can extend beyond donations to creating sustainable programmes with lasting impact.

Throughout the tournament, parents stood on the sidelines in sunshine and rain, coaches devoted countless hours to preparing their teams, while organisers from the Lagos State Grassroots Football Association ensured another successful competition. Together, they formed a support system around children whose ambitions reach far beyond neighbourhood football pitches.

Olugboyegun acknowledged their collective efforts, describing the competition as a partnership dedicated to shaping the future of Nigerian football and empowering the next generation.

Mr. and Mrs. Demola Odeyemi; the Managing Director of Optimus Bank join the winners of the 7th JOF U-13 Cup to celebrate their victory after the final match

He also challenged business leaders, financial institutions and development partners to support grassroots sports, noting that investment in youth development is ultimately an investment in the country’s future.

Despite the heavy rainfall, the closing ceremony attracted an impressive gathering of corporate executives, government officials and sports stakeholders. Among those present were Mr. Segun Olugboyegun and his wife; former Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. and Mrs. Demola Odeyemi; the Managing Director of Optimus Bank; the Managing Director of JOF Nigeria Limited, Ms. Heather Frankle; Mrs. Chioma Udu of Guaranty Trust Bank; Captain Femi Ibitoye; Hon. Olumide Atungbayila of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning; and other distinguished guests.

As medals were presented, trophies lifted and celebrations echoed around the stadium, one message stood out above all else. The JOF U-13 Cup is no longer simply an annual football competition. It has evolved into a platform where ambition meets opportunity, where talent finds direction and where future football stars begin their journey.

For Fortune Football Academy, Sunday’s victory will be remembered as a championship won under difficult conditions. For JOF Nigeria Limited, however, the greater triumph lies in proving once again that consistent investment in grassroots sports can transform lives, strengthen communities and keep the dream of Nigerian football alive—one young player at a time.
