The Ikorodu High Court in Lagos has adjourned till February 26, 2025, to hear two applications in a suit concerning the Regun Chieftaincy stool in Ikorodu, Lagos.

The suit, marked IKD/87380CM/2022, was filed in 2022 by two claimants, Chief Kameeel Adisa Dada and Hon. Gbenga Oshin.

The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotebi, and one Alhaji Jamiu Shittu are the first and second of three defendants.

During the latest round of proceedings on December 12, 2024, before another judge -Justice M.I. Oshodi, Yemi Okewoye appeared for the claimants while Abdullahi Ademoyin was for the defendant.

Okewoye said: “The claimants have a pending application before the court dated 27th day of November, 2024. I filed and served on the same day,. It is for the claimants to amend their statement of claim. We have since served on the defendant, if it pleases the court, we are set to move the application.

But Ademoyin asked for more time. He said: “We have been served, however we are still within time to respond, in addition we were served with further affidavit this morning and my principal informed me that he intends to study it, it’s the 6th day.”

Opposing him, Okewoye expressed surprise at the defence counsel’s position.

He claimant’s counsel responded: “My lord, today is the 7th day, we are surprised with the manner of practice, it is a simple application to amend our processes and the defendant had all the time to respond and they refused to.

“In the circumstance, we shall be asking for a day to come seek to move the application.

“We also have a form 49, pending before the court. We would appreciate a date to move the applications.

Granting Okewoye’s prayer in a bench ruling, Justice Oshodi held: “The case is adjourned to 26th of February, 2025 for hearing both applications.”

In May 2023, Justice Adeniyi Pokanu of the Ikorodu High Court barred Mr. Adeniran Olusegun Shodipo from holding himself out as the Regun, pending the determination of a suit concerning the Regun Chieftaincy stool.

The same judge had on July 8, 2022 granted an interlocutory injunction recognizing the Chief Kameel Dadat as the Regun of Ikorodu and restraining Shittu from holding himself out as the Head of the Regun Family.

Following an application, Justice Pokanu added Shodipo as a party on October 17, 2022, making him the third defendant.

By a further and better affidavit dated 27th November, 2024 the 1st Claimant deposed that despite the two subsisting orders of court, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu at a public function on the 25th October, 2024 at Ikorodu town hall ordered his servants to remove and collect chief Kameel Dada’s traditional White cap and beads.
