In a world of constant change, following one’s passion can lead to unexpected and meaningful impact. Davies Osagie, a media personality and mental health advocate, has found a way to use his career in advertising, media, and film to shine a spotlight on mental health issues in Nigeria.

Osagie’s journey began in a family deeply rooted in the print and advertising industry. Growing up surrounded by creativity and communication, he was naturally drawn to media, even though his career path was not immediately clear.

“I didn’t set out to choose advertising as a profession; in many ways, it chose me,” Osagie reflected. “My father’s work in advertising shaped my view of the world and gave me an appreciation for storytelling and connection.”

While his initial focus was on advertising, Osagie’s curiosity and desire to tell meaningful stories expanded into media and film. This evolution led him to work on Convalescence, a documentary addressing mental health. The critically acclaimed film not only earned recognition at major festivals, including the Teesvalley Film Festival and Rsfilm Fest, but also sparked important national conversations. Osagie’s performance in the film even garnered him a nomination for Best Actor at the Rsfilm Fest in Bristol.

Despite these accolades, Osagie emphasizes that the real success of Convalescence lies in its ability to inspire dialogue. “It’s about more than awards. The real reward is seeing people engage with the conversation on mental health, a topic that’s often overlooked,” he said.

Osagie’s advocacy has extended beyond the documentary. He has appeared on platforms such as Rhythm FM and Mainland FM to amplify the message of Convalescence and promote open discussions about mental well-being.

Reflecting on his own struggles with public speaking, he said, “I used to get really nervous in front of an audience. Over time, I learned to manage that fear and use my voice for something meaningful.”

He also credits mentors and role models for helping shape his journey.

During a conversation with Jim, a senior lecturer at Teesside University, Osagie was reminded of the importance of embracing change and taking unconventional paths.

Jim’s transition from a construction worker to an academic leader resonated with Osagie, affirming his belief in personal growth and resilience.

Through his work in media and advocacy, Osagie continues to challenge the stigma around mental health in Nigeria. “Media, when used right, can be a powerful catalyst for change,” he said.

As Osagie looks to the future, he remains committed to creating impactful stories and fostering conversations that matter. His journey serves as a reminder of the transformative power of passion, resilience, and the courage to address issues that affect society.
