Delta 2022: Historic Outing Excites Lagos Scrabble Team

The 21st National Sports Festival tagged Delta 2022 would remain a festival to note for the Scrabble Team of Lagos  State which broke age long record while competing at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

The Scrabble event ended on Tuesday with Team Lagos winning 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

Interestingly, the team had a unique outing with the winning of a gold medal in the prestigious event of scrabble. This was done for the first time in the history of the game in Lagos State.  Captain Olatunde Oduwole opened the gate of this success when he won gold medal in the master’s event.

“We are so excited coming to this competition where we broke the record of winning what I can describe as the Elite Gold,” Oduwole, the captain of the Lagos Scrabble Team said.

He revealed that never in the history of Scrabble in Lagos that “we will win a gold medal in the master event. This is the prestigious category in Scrabble and I am happy that Lagos won it for the first time here in Asaba.”¢

According to Oduwole, a member of the country’s national team, “This is the first time scrabble in Lagos would win gold in the singles event. I mean the elite category. This is not an easy task.

“We also won another gold in the female team event, while Cecilia Akhabueh made it three when she won the MVP gold medal. This is a feat to celebrate as a team and as the captain of the Scrabble Team,” he said.

On how the team got to this level, the Iduganran, Lagos-born player said the spirit in the camp was very high with the determination of the players to do the Lagos proud in Asaba.

“I will give credit to the unifying spirit in the camp. We were united in purpose and in goal,” he said.

He applauded the instant cash rewards to the athletes instituted by the Lagos State Government, adding that this would no doubt encourage the athletes to put in their best.

“I think we need to give kudos to the government for this cash rewards,” he said.
