A Gynaecologist, Dr. Gboyega Fawole, on Friday decried what he described as the alarming rate of abortion among young girls in the country.
Fawole, who works with the University of llorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, raised the concern in llorin while delivering a Ramadan lecture titled: “Who We Are: What We Are Made of.”
The lecture was part of a series organised by the lslamic Missionaries Association of Nigeria (lMAN) in llorin, Kwara.
Fawole said: “From clinical observations, many young girls come to the clinics requesting for abortions.
“The frequency is higher than what was obtainable in times past. The effects can make a woman childless for life.”
He urged girls to desist from premarital sex to avoid series of abortion because of the effects.
“Female children should avoid inserting abortion tools into their private parts; this can lead to hard labour as well as maternal and infant mortality,” he said.
According to him, girls should also avoid the application of soap and perfume in their private parts to guard against bacteria and fungi.
The medical practitioner also emphasised the need for female children to open up to their mothers for guidance.
