CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
It was a nasty experience for the Divisional Police Officer of the Aswani Division under the Lagos State Command, SP Adeleke Ojajuni, after he was brutally attacked and injured by a tricycle rider while he was controlling traffic on the highway.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Aiye Bus Stop Junction in Isolo area of Lagos State, where SP Ojajuni went to control traffic with his officers.
The 44-year old tricycle operator, Adeyemi Elegbede, has been arrested and charged before the Court for serious assault on SP Ojajuni.
He was said to have rode against the traffic while the Police were trying to decongest and control traffic in the area. When the DPO directed him to go back and follow the right lane, he refused and insisted that he will not do so because he was the son of the soil in the area.
He was then apprehended and in the process he grabbed the DPO, assaulted him, tore his rank from the uniform and threw it away.
However, he was overpowered and eventually taken to the Police Station. Subsequently, he was arraigned before the Isolo Magistrates Court for the alleged offence.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr. Oje Uagbale, asked the Court to give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove that he accentually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Akokhia, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
He was remanded in Correctional Centre pending when he will perfect his bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 21st October, 2021, for mention.
While the defendant was being taken into custody, he said he did not know that the officer he assaulted was the DPO, stating that he would have done such to any other Police officer apart from the victim.
