The hard drug cartels may have changed their strategy of smuggling hard drugs in the Nigeria, following the interception of 18 bales of substances suspected to be Indian hemp worth over N10m on the waterways in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that this was confirmed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal at the State Command in Ikeja, Lagos.

The police boss noted that the cartel had changed their strategies after the police busted their route from Ghana to Nigeria through the roads and then they resorted to smuggling the illicit drugs through the waterways.

However, Mr. Edgal said that the police had high intelligence units to monitor their activities and ensure that they did not bring those substances to the streets to the addicts and destroy the society the more.

He said based on the intelligence gathered, the police got hint of the strategy of the cartels and moved into action to checkmate them on the waterways. He stated that on 4th of May, 2018, the Divisional Police Officer of Osolu Kingdom and his team intercepted 18 bales of sustances suspected to be cannabis at Ajidun waterways and cash of N250,000.

The police boss said that one of the suspects, Mr. Segun Bashiru was arrested and the two boats which they used in ferrying the illicit drugs were also seized and kept as exhibits at the Command.

CP Edgal said that the police will continue to work with sister security agencies to ensure that the activities of the drug dealers were checked because of the implication in the society. He noted that it was stimulating hard drugs that the criminal elements used which influenced them to commit various crimes and cause violence in the society.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the police appeared to be gradually winning the war on drug dealers as it recently intercepted another set of cartels and drugs. Some members of the cartels were arrested and detained at the Command. That happened two weeks ago and the street value of the drugs was put at about N30m routed through Ghana.

The CP said that the suspects will be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigations. He thanked the members of the public for giving the police credible information which had led to the successes recorded by the police in recent times.

However, it appeared that the police had taken the shine of fighting the drug war off NDLEA which appeared not to have enough capacity to fight drug war in Nigeria.
