If everything goes as planned, residents of Awka, the capital of Anambra State will soon begin to enjoy 18 hours power supply as the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC in partnership with the Government of Anambra State conclude plans to commission the 7.5MVA injection substation located in the premises of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Awka.

This was made known by the Anambra State Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Obi Nwankwo, during a recent tour of the facility to establish the level of readiness of the substation ahead of its inauguration.

Mr. Nwankwo who was guided on the tour by the EEDC Project Supervisor, Mr. Ejike Okoye explained that the project would soon be commissioned to ensure a significant improvement in power supply in Awka.

Expressing satisfaction with the extent of work done, Mr. Nwankwo revealed that another 1x15MVA has also been installed at Agu Awka axis to boost power supply in that surrounding. “All these happened because the government complained to EEDC that the state secretariat, the Government House, ABS and the surrounding areas are usually in darkness and it is affecting productivity in both the public and private sectors. So, I am very happy to see what they have done since then and I commend EEDC for their efforts. They have also installed the 1x15MVA in Agu Awka which is going to improve power supply in that area for about 15 hours also,” Mr Nwankwo revealed.

According to him, the Obiano administration has made a long series of critical interventions in the power sector from inception.

Recalling the numerous interventions Commissioner Nwankwo said “The first project Governor Obiano did when he assumed office was to install all the transformers that the previous administration had distributed. Then we bought 400 transformers and distributed them to all the communities in Anambra State. He also built a 33KVA line from Oji River in Enugu State to Orumba North and South which gave about 33 communities power supply. Most of them had not had light in many years. Then he built 33KVA line from Awada passing through Idemmili to Nnewi which has boosted power supply in Nnewi, and another 33KVA from Agu Awka to Anambra North. These are massive investments and they are helping the people of Anambra state.”

The Commissioner therefore called on the people of the state to help protect electrical installations in the state because they belong to the people and not necessarily to the government.

Also speaking, the Project Supervisor, Mr. Ejike Okoye, explained that the injection substation in the premises of ABS would guarantee efficient electricity supply to Okpuno, the State Secretariat Complex and Ifite area of the capital city.
