The Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, has disclosed that Africa’s greatest asset remains the youth.
In a statement Tuesday August 12 to commemorate the International Youth Day, the seasoned entrepreneur said the youth are not only the future but the present.
He added that both business and political leaders owe it to them to build where they can thrive.
“They are not only our future – they are our present. We owe it to them to build an environment where they can thrive. That is why I often say: youth unemployment is a betrayal of a generation and we must confront it with everything we have,” Elumelu said. “My wife and I created the Tony Elumelu Foundation as our commitment to Africa’s youth. Today, we have empowered over 24,000 young African entrepreneurs with the training, funding, and mentorship to build sustainable businesses and create jobs across our continent.
“To our young people: life will have its highs and lows. What matters is staying resilient, focused, hungry, and disciplined. When challenges come, see them as rites of passage on your journey to success. Never give up. Keep a positive mindset. Make wise decisions. Keep investing in yourself and in your future.
“To every young African building, creating, and persevering – I see you. I believe in you. I stand with you. Keep pushing forward. Happy International Youth Day,” he summed.
