In today’s world, the adoption of digital technology in governance is no longer optional; it is a necessity. The recent publication of the beneficiaries’ list for Governor Umo Eno’s empowerment programmes provides a powerful example of why this is true.
In this opinion piece, as a technology adoption ambassador, IT professional and a concerned Akwaibomite, I would attempt to explain the intricacies surrounding the recent claims and counter claims as it regards the beneficiaries of the empowerment programme, situating it to social media rebuttals by some Support Group Heads.
The Governor’s administration has invested over N2.4 billion to support entrepreneurial growth and uplift vulnerable communities across Akwa Ibom State. The published list included many members of the governor’s support groups; however, some Support Group Heads contested their inclusion, claiming they had not received any funds and should not have appeared on the list.
Governor Umo Eno swiftly addressed these concerns by explaining that the list was generated directly from the Akwa Ibom State Empowerment Portal, an innovative, one-stop digital platform created under his leadership. This portal enables all citizens, regardless of political ties, to apply for government empowerment schemes. It captures extensive beneficiary details such as names, bank account numbers, BVN, NIN, applicant photo passport, and importantly, their affiliation to specific support groups.
Crucially, the portal links each beneficiary to their respective Support Group Leader, who is the authorised individual responsible for registering members. This means every group member listed has been formally nominated by their Group Head, creating a clear and verifiable digital record. The confusion stemmed from the fact that funds are disbursed directly to individual members’ accounts – not routed through the Group Heads. This transparent system ensures that empowerment funds reach the rightful recipients directly, which is a clear demonstration of accountability.
This experience highlights the enormous potential of technology in public administration. By leveraging digital solutions like the Akwa Ibom Empowerment Portal, government programmes can be managed with unprecedented transparency, accuracy, and efficiency. Digital records provide solid evidence of transactions and beneficiaries, reducing disputes and increasing public trust.
Importantly, this aligns with Akwa Ibom’s ongoing digital transformation, where e-governance is redefining how government services are delivered. What used to be lengthy, paper-based processes bogged down by bureaucracy have now been replaced by streamlined, citizen-focused digital services.
Governor Umo Eno’s forward-thinking approach shows how technology can enhance not only operational efficiency but also democratic inclusivity, allowing citizens from all backgrounds to benefit fairly and transparently.
In summary, the Akwa Ibom Empowerment Portal is a shining example of how digital innovation can bolster government transparency and service delivery. It offers a valuable model for other governments eager to harness the power of technology for good governance. The clarity and trust fostered by such platforms underscore why digital adoption is essential for the future of effective public administration.
