The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in collaboration with The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) Programme, launched the Safeguarding and Child Protection Week as part of the awareness month. The theme for this year’s event is “I Say No to Child Abuse”, held at Eko Boys High School, Mushin.

Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Agency, was represented by DSVA Child Safeguarding Officer, Mrs. Doyin Awosika Poroye, emphasised that the era of complacency regarding child abuse is over. She highlighted the present administration’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of abuse in the State.

Mrs. Ajibola Ijimakinwa, State Project Coordinator of ROLAC (funded by the European Union and managed by IDEA), outlined the programme’s purpose which is to educate children about their rights and encourage them to speak out against child abuse.

Mrs. Bola Lawal, District Counselor for District II Oshodi/Isolo, represented by Mrs. Ola. G. Omotuloye, noted that the programme would enhance students’ understanding and urged them to share the information acquired with their peers.

The event, attended by School Principals, Counsellors and Nigeria Union of Teachers representatives, engaged 306 participants from Eko Boys Junior and Senior High School and Birch Freeman Junior/Senior High School. They were educated on “Understanding Child Abuse and Their Rights as Children”, with Mr. Damilare Adewusi, Head of Department Community Engagement at Lagos DSVA, leading the session.

He stressed that children under 18 cannot legally give consent and encouraged them to speak out, reassuring them that the government is committed to their welfare.
