Etiquette has been well described as forms, manners, and ceremonies established by convention as acceptable or required in social relations, in a profession, or official life.

Social etiquette deals more with our customary and polite attitude while engaging with others in various personal and social situations.

Let’s take a look at some social etiquette rules that build good habits and endear us to others.

1. Don’t call someone continuously more than once unless it’s an urgent matter and if they don’t pick up, wait until they return the call.

2. Don’t lend out what you borrowed. If it is not yours, don’t act as if it is.

3. If you borrow money from someone, return it, even before they ask for it.

4. If you borrow someone’s car, fill the fuel tank before you return it.

5. When meeting someone for the first time, unless they want to talk about it, don’t ask them about their age and salary.

6. Push your chair in when you leave a table. Don’t make someone else do it for you.

7. Never comment on something wrong with someone’s appearance unless it is something they can immediately fix.

8. When attending an event/occasion you were singularly invited, ask before bringing a guest or your kids. Don’t assume they’re automatically invited, no matter how well you know your host.

9. Don’t make plans in front of those you are not willing to invite, especially if it is at your place, your birthday, or a special occasion.

10. If a colleague tells you they have a doctor’s appointment, don’t ask what it’s for, just say “I hope you’re okay”. Don’t put them in the uncomfortable position of having to tell you about their illness. If they want you to know, they’ll do so without your prompting.

11. Don’t offer opinions and advice to strangers unless you are asked.

12. If someone shows you a photo on their phone, don’t swipe left or right. If they want to show you what’s next they’ll do it.

13. When you wrong someone, say ‘Sorry’ and don’t ruin your apology with unnecessary excuses just to justify what you’ve done.

14. Refrain from looking at your phone when somebody is speaking to you. Look at the person who is speaking to you.

15. Don’t whisper something to someone when it is only one more person sitting with you two.

16. Don’t record a private conversation without the consent of the 2nd party, except for criminal prosecution or within the legal requirement.

17. Never go to someone’s place uninvited or without letting them know you are passing by in advance.

18. Not everyone wants to be all over social media, and you’re not a reporter — so stop spreading the news and posting private pictures without permission.

19. If your children are invited to a friend’s house to play, they should also feel invited to help with the cleanup of the house before they leave.

20. Never talk about your riches in the midst of the poor. Similarly, don’t talk about your children in the midst of the barren.
