The Patron of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State, Eze Christian Nwachukwu, has lauded the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State, Chief Leonard Okafor, popularly known as Oba Ojoto, for decentralizing the operations of Ohanaeze across the Local Councils in Lagos.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that Eze Nwachukwu made the commendation in response to the structural reforms introduced by Chief Oba Ojoto since he assumed office as President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos. The reforms are designed to bring the administration and activities of Ohanaeze closer to Igbo residents at the grassroots level.
Eze Nwachukwu, who also holds the traditional title ‘Ochi Agha’ of Obodoukwu Town in Imo State, described the decentralization as a timely and strategic intervention.
According to him, the move will strengthen Ohanaeze’s presence in every Local Council and promote a stronger sense of belonging among Ndigbo across Lagos.
“For years, Ohanaeze’s activities have been centralized, making it difficult for many of our people in the outlying areas to participate actively,” Eze Nwachukwu said.
“With this decentralization, Ndigbo in Ikorodu, Badagry, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Surulere, and other LCDAs can now engage directly with Ohanaeze leadership without traveling long distances.”
He noted that the new structure would not only enhance communication and coordination but also build trust and confidence among Ndigbo in Lagos.
He added that it would encourage greater participation in cultural preservation, welfare programs, and security initiatives that benefit the entire community.
The Ochi Agha emphasized that the reform aligns with the original vision of Ohanaeze Ndigbo as an inclusive and unifying body for all Igbo people, irrespective of their location or status.
He urged all stakeholders to support the initiative for the long-term growth and stability of Ndigbo in Lagos State.
On the ongoing internal disagreements within Ohanaeze Lagos, Eze Nwachukwu appealed to aggrieved factions opposed to Chief Oba Ojoto’s leadership to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution.
He stressed that division among Ndigbo only weakens their collective influence in Lagos politics, commerce, and social affairs.
“I call on all dissenting groups to use the platform of the Council of Elders to present their grievances in an orderly and respectful manner,” he said.
“The Council of Elders remains neutral and is committed to resolving all matters amicably for the overall progress of Ndigbo in Lagos State.”
Eze Nwachukwu, who also holds the title as ‘Otun gbobaniyi of lsolo’ given by the Osolo of Isolo, further called on all Igbo leaders, traditional rulers, and community associations in Lagos to place unity above personal interests and ambition.
He reminded the community that Ndigbo are stronger and more effective when they speak with one voice, especially in a cosmopolitan state like Lagos.
In conclusion, the Ochi Agha prayed for wisdom, tolerance, and understanding among all Ohaneze stakeholders.
He expressed optimism that with cooperation and mutual respect, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos will emerge stronger, more inclusive, and better positioned to protect and promote the cultural identity and welfare of Ndigbo in the state.
