The sad news about an Abuja based newspaper vendor, the late Mr. Ifeanyi Okereke, who was shot dead by Mr. Hassan Abdullahi, a  security aide attached to the convoy of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, had received wide media bashing and condemnation by Nigerians since the ugly incident happened on Thursday, November 19, 2020.

The victim, it was gathered, alongside his newspaper vendor colleagues, on spotting the Speaker as he made his way out of the Assembly complex, milled around him to salute and share usual pleasantries with their ‘big man friend’ as it has been the custom ever since Hon. Femi Gbajbiamila moved down to  Abuja as a Federal legislator.

While the Nigeria Police Force as usual; the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, has blatantly denied reports that a Policeman attached to the convoy of Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, fired the stray bullet that killed an innocent newspaper vendor, a more sincere and humane Speaker has admitted that his security aide actually committed the offence and has been suspended until further investigations.

The incident has elicited sympathy online as well as sparked outrage across the country, with many Nigerians calling for stringent punishment measures for the culprit and due compensation for the family of the victim.

A more humane and sincere Femi Gbajbiamila in responding to the incident said that he would not only ensure that the victim’s family was duly supported with the needed assistance to cushion the effect of his loss, but would also see that the appropriate punishment or sanction is meted on Mr. Hassan Abdullahi, the killer.

In his press release as obtained by this reporter, which read in part:
”I have handed over Abdullahi M. Hassan to the Department of State Services for investigation and appropriate administrative and judicial action. In the interim, he has been suspended from the convoy”.

“I have expressed my personal condolence to his family and have arranged to meet with the parents of Mr. Okereke; who are already on their way to Abuja.”

“I have committed to them that I will support his wife and the immediate family he left behind.”
“I ask Nigerians to join me in praying for the repose of his soul.”

Meanwhile, there is a feeling that many frayed nerves have been calmed ever since the Speaker made his press release which largely puts him on the spotlight of being a humane and sincere leader rather than the arrogant majority public office holders, who demean the masses with their positions.
