From World Cup Goalkeeper To Dream Builder: Judith Chime’s Mission For Girls

𝐏AUL LUKCY OKOKU

Some footballers leave the game with medals and memories. Others turn their experience into opportunities for young people who might never otherwise find a path into sport. Former Super Falcons goalkeeper 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐧𝐞𝐤𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐞 is doing both.

I have known Judith for many years. I admire what she accomplished in Nigeria’s colours, but I am equally interested in what she is building through the 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: a platform where girls can compete, gain confidence and pursue ambitions beyond their immediate surroundings.

Her next undertaking, the 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, is scheduled for 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏–𝟐𝟎 in 𝐄𝐧𝐮𝐠𝐮, 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚. Before the first whistle sounds, her own journey deserves to be told.

Judith was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟗 𝐅𝐈𝐅𝐀 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐮𝐩 in the United States, where the Super Falcons reached the quarterfinals. On 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏, against Brazil, she replaced goalkeeper 𝐀𝐧𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐣𝐢𝐧𝐞 in the 40th minute, with Nigeria trailing 3–0. The Falcons rallied to 3–3 before Brazil won 4–3 in extra time.

It remains one of Nigerian women’s football’s most memorable comebacks. Judith guarded the goal as her teammates fought their way back into the contest.

A year later, she represented Nigeria at the 𝐒𝐲𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬, facing some of the strongest teams in women’s football. Few players experience both stages. Fewer still channel those lessons into opportunities for children discovering the game.

𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦

Judith’s career continued at 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 in Georgia, where she played from 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟐 𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟓. The university credits her with 𝟒𝟗𝟒 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝟐𝟓 𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬 and approximately 𝟕,𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 in goal. Her performances earned her induction into the 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐞 in 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎.

Those numbers tell a story of consistency, not a single spectacular afternoon. Goalkeeping demands responsibility when an entire stadium is watching. It also teaches patience: one saves a match through preparation long before the decisive shot arrives.

During the 𝐅𝐈𝐅𝐀 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐮𝐩 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 celebrations in Atlanta, Judith and I were among former internationals honoured and recognised as 𝐅𝐈𝐅𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 through the City of East Point’s international football and hospitality programme.

Organised through the 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮, the gathering brought together former internationals from Africa, the Caribbean and beyond, including 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧, Trinidad and Tobago’s World Cup veteran; 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐬 of South Africa; 𝐉𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐞 of Jamaica; and 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐬 of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The programme included 𝐕𝐈𝐏 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, World Cup activities, international networking and media engagements. Among the civic leaders supporting the celebration were 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐬, President and CEO of the East Point Convention & Visitors Bureau; 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐛 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐬, Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners; and former East Point Mayor 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐲 𝐉𝐨 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐝.

Participants were introduced and credentialed as FIFA Legends during the engagements, against the backdrop of the World Cup and hospitality surrounding matches at Atlanta’s 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐬-𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐳 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦.

Having known Judith for many years, I took particular pride in sharing that recognition with her. We represented Nigeria in different generations, but football brought our journeys together again on an international stage.

The next chapter is taking shape in Enugu.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐮𝐠𝐮 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧

Organized through the 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, with the 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 (𝐘𝐒𝐅𝐎𝐍) and 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 identified as partners, the December championship aims to discover, develop and celebrate young female footballers through organised competition.

For many girls, the obstacle is not a lack of talent but a lack of opportunity. Without accessible competitions, experienced coaches and development pathways, exceptional abilities can remain undiscovered.

Judith understands the distance between a child’s first steps in football and an international stage. She travelled that road herself. Now she wants others to have a chance to begin.

As founder of the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝, I particularly appreciate initiatives that place children at the centre of meaningful opportunities. A football tournament can do more than produce winners and trophies. It can uncover talent, strengthen self-belief, build friendships and introduce young people to possibilities they had never imagined.

Nigeria rightly celebrates its Super Falcons when they represent our country internationally.

We should also celebrate former internationals like Judith Chime who are investing in those who may follow.
