GADA Moves To Prevent Building Collapse In Aba, Evacuates Residents From Compromised Four-Storey Building

The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has taken swift action following the discovery of a visible crack on a four storey building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, with the evacuation of occupants and commencement of safety measures to prevent any possible disaster.

 

The Authority’s Building Control Unit, Engineering Department and Town Planning Department promptly responded to the situation and carried out a preliminary inspection of the affected building. Findings from the inspection revealed extensive cracks around the foundation of the structure, indicating that the foundation has been seriously compromised.

The structural defect was assessed as a significant safety risk that could potentially lead to the collapse of the building if urgent measures were not taken. Consequently, the building has been declared unsafe for habitation.

In line with its mandate to protect lives and property, GADA immediately evacuated all residents from the building to ensure their safety. The Authority is also making arrangements for the controlled demolition of the structure, with strict measures in place to prevent casualties and minimise possible damage to adjoining properties.

The Director General of GADA, Arc. Uche Ukeje, assured residents and the general public that there is no cause for panic, stressing that the situation is under control and that all necessary safety protocols have been activated.

“Residents are advised to cooperate with officials and avoid the affected area while the ongoing operations are being carried out. The safety of lives and property remains our utmost priority,” the Director General said.

GADA has commenced a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure and has reiterated its commitment to enforcing building safety standards across Greater Aba.

The Authority also urged residents to promptly report any signs of structural distress, including unusual cracks or visible defects in buildings, to the appropriate authorities for immediate assessment and necessary action.
