The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has been described as someone who is always concerned and passionate about the development of children. These he has been doing through the intervention of sports and education since he took over the mantle of leadership in the state .

Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku made the statement while addressing pupils at the maiden edition of an event tagged “Sports Day” to commemorate the Year 2022 International Children’s Day held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere,  Lagos.

The event was organised to promote the integration of Sports, Education and to provide  an avenue for students to learn about the rudiments of Taekwondo and Table Tennis.

He said the female-child needs to go through the rudiments of Taekwondo which would give them the opportunity to defend themselves against any external attack.

“It’s important that we get our fundamental right by taking them self-defense, discipline  and self-esteem, so, that they can grow up to those values and become a good ambassador of the society.

He also noted that they can represent the state if they try to improve and maintain the momentum, adding that competitions are increasing in levels and their performance will give room for them to become great ambassadors of the state.

“This is National Youth Games (NYG) and Festival year. In the history of the NYG, Lagos State went with the youngest contingent in the last edition in Ilorin.
We have 12, 13 and 10 year-old athletes who competed and they all won medals.

“We want to consolidate on that established culture and trend and make sure that we continue from there,” he said.

President of the Goldcrest Family Center, Rev. (Mrs) Agatha Unoma Chukwura, highlighted that the children mindsets need to be changed especially at this time of the nation transition.

She said: “We felt that sports has the power to occupy the whole body of human beings. It makes their senses to be positive.

“Sports is educative, value adding and they can take it as a profession in their individual lives and that’s why we secured this kind of marriage to inject some beneficial to our children.”.
