There is progress in the direction of a strengthened and improved justice system in Imo State as Chief Sir COC Akaolisa,KSJ has been graciously appointed and inaugurated by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Executive Governor of Imo, to chair the Imo State Law Reform Commission (LRC).
In accordance with the relevant sections of the Imo State Law No 41 of 2019, the Commission shall see to the restructuring of obsolete and non-functional laws.
To this end, the team will be saddled with the responsibility of collating and keeping under review, Laws of Eastern Nigeria 1963 as applicable to Imo State and Laws of Imo State since 1976, with a view to their systematic, progressive development and reform in consonance with the prevailing norms of our Society.
These efforts are geared towards repositioning Imo State in line with global best practices on justice dispensation by domesticating and harmonizing Laws of Imo State from 1963 to date, leading to the discontinuation of Laws of Eastern Nigeria quotation in our Law Courts.
So far, similar journeys in this regard have seen to the domestication of the Imo State Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the state’s recent partnership with Civil Society Organizations (CSO) for a pilot program in the Reform and Decongestion of Correctional Centers.
