A group under the aegis of Reformed Society for Truth and Equity has called upon the residents of the border towns of Seme, Gwaji and Badagry to beware of the antics of some smugglers who try to incite them against government operatives especially officers of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The group made the call while reacting through its Chairman, Dr. Great Gbenupo, to a report in a national newspaper.
According to him, “most people who sponsor these publications are known smugglers who have no other means of livelihood and will resort to seek the support of innocent villagers to cause trouble which often leads to loss of lives and properties.
“We had been at the forefront of making sure there exists a good working relationship between our people and all the agencies that operate in this zone and will never condone any situation any of our citizens will be unjustly molested. But we will not equally support unnecessary attack on any officer or officers in the course of carrying out their legitimate duties.”
Gbenupo said the miscreants go down memory lane as far back as 2008 to bring back ugly incidents that had been resolved just to sow the seed of animosity between the residents and officials of the agencies.
“The most surprising allegations against some officers whose names were mentioned as having killed Mr. Michael were not true. This association carried out intensive investigation and sent delegates to Abuja where we had serious discussions with relevant authorities and we discovered that the accused officer was not even present at the scene. Trouble is an evil wind that blows no one any good,” he said.
