The APC candidate for Rivers West Senatorial District, Rt. Hon. Asita Honourable, has expressed sympathy and concerns to flood victims in Rivers State, especially in the Orashi region comprising of the people of Abua Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Areas.
So far, many communities have been submerged by the ravaging flood, a situation that has resulted to serious humanitarian crisis, as many have fled their homes, farm lands ravaged resulting in premature harvest of crops, pollution and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
Asita reasoned that since the dawn of civilization, man had made ceaseless efforts to conquer and subdue nature, opining that it is high time government at all levels take practical steps to usher in the best mitigating approach and a more enduring methodology to reduce the consequences of perennial floodings on the people of the region and it’s environment, our scientists must be encouraged to carry out a thorough research on how to profer a practical and far-reaching solutions, he stressed.
The Orashi Leader promised to champion legislations that will address perennial floodings in Nigeria if elected to the Senate.
“We must invent a national action plan, strategically focused to deal with the challenge of perennial floodings, lack of adequate shoreline protection measures and dredging of water channels for a balance society free from environmental degradation.”
Asita called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, especially NEMA that is saddled with disaster management, to swing into action and provide succour to victims. He also challenged the Rivers State Government and that of Local Government Areas to do the needful. He further called on multinationals, humanitarian agencies and philanthropic individuals to come to the aid of the affected communities and individuals.
