ERNIE ONWUMERE
As we celebrate this Master Legislator whose birthday falls on 16 August, I took a deep retrospect into the selfless and dedicated service of this great Legislator, and the enduring legacy his legislation has brought to Anambra State, his dear state.
In the crowded gallery of public servants, some names stand out not just for the offices they held, but for the footprints they left. Hon. Chike Anyaonu is one of such names.
Perhaps _Hon. Chike Anyaonu may be the only Legislator in Anambra State to have moved the greatest motions and passed bills into law in modern-day legislation_. His record is not just about quantity, but about weight — laws and motions that shifted the direction of the state.
From the _famous motion: “That Onitsha cannot be ceded to Delta State”_ — a bold and daring move at a time when the IBB administration contemplated boundary adjustments — to the _Executive Bill for the establishment of Anambra State University in 2000_, it has been legislation at its very best from one of the most detailed minds in lawmaking.
No wonder then, that as a _minority member of the NRC in the Anambra State House of Assembly in 1992_, he was voted _Best Legislator of the Year_ for having moved the most impactful motion and successfully shepherded key bills through the House. In a house of many voices, his stood out for clarity, courage, and conviction.
*A Journey Across Three Tiers*
Hon. Anyaonu’s service cuts across all levels of government, a rare feat that gives him a panoramic understanding of governance:
– _Councillor, 1990_ — where he learnt the politics of the grassroots
– _Member, Anambra State House of Assembly, 1992_ — where he earned the “Master Legislator” badge
– _Member, House of Representatives, 1998_ — taking Anambra’s voice to the national stage
– _Special Adviser on Legislative Matters, 1999–2003_ — serving in one of the most turbulent periods in Anambra State’s history, providing stability and legislative direction when it was needed most
*The Lesson for Today’s Legislators*
Today, legislators should look at _the tail of the kite_ and learn: how to support the people and government the _”I win, you win”_ way. That was Anyaonu’s style. He didn’t legislate for applause. He legislated for impact. He understood that good law is not about ego, but about outcomes — jobs, schools, hospitals, and dignity for the people.
Even today, long after leaving legislative office, _Hon. Chike Anyaonu still writes legal bills, now from a housing perspective_. The pen has not rested, because service is a calling, not a tenure.
*Celebrating a Legacy*
As he clocks yet another year today, _16 August_, we do more than celebrate age. We celebrate wisdom. We celebrate courage. We celebrate a man who chose to build institutions rather than just occupy offices.
We wish him good health, renewed strength, and more years of offering service to Ndi Anambra and to Nigeria.
In Hon. Chike Anyaonu, Anambra has a template of what a Master Legislator should be: bold in motion, meticulous in bill, and faithful in service.
Happy Birthday to The Master Legislator. Ojichiemeonu.
