Hon. Gwacham Moves For Federal Govt’s Urgent Intervention To Tackle Erosion Menace In Oyi/Ayemelum Federal Constituency

The Honourable Member representing the good people of Oyi/Ayamelum federal constituency, Hon. Gwacham Maureen, has moved for the urgent intervention of the Federal Government through its relevant agencies and ministries to cushion the effect of the perennial floodings ravaging her Federal Constituency and further forestall future occurrence on the floor of the green chambers of the National Assembly.
The motion titled “Call for urgent intervention on the Jeopardy of Perennial Flood and Erosion in Nteje, Umunya, and Ogbunike in Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency of Anambra State”, reads in part;
The House:
Note that the good people of Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency are yearly submerged by flood and erosion resulting to death and unredeemable pain of displacement.
Also note that this flood and erosion is particularly in Eke-Igwe Yam Market in Nteje town, Isioye-Umuebo-Ojobi-Umunya, and Anioma-Amawa-Osile-Ogbunike road, and have brought untold hardship, displacement among others to the people in that vicinity.
Concerned that the people of the affected areas have resorted to self help which has failed as the years go by.
Worried that this jeopardy is affecting negatively economic activities of the people in Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency, who are predominantly farmers.
Also worried that if this menace of flood and erosion is not urgently curbed, it could vitiate into higher calamity as surrounding communities will be affected.
The house further Resolved to;
(i) urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relieve materials to the victims of flood and erosion disaster in Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency of Anambra State;
(ii) urge the Ecological Fund Office, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Works to tackle the menace of flooding in the affected areas
(iii) Further urge the Federal Ministry of Works to commence repairs and reconstruction of affected roads.
(iv) Set up a National Emergency Management Agency Station in Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency of Anambra State to assist residents in the event of emergency that could to adverse effects.
(v) mandate the committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to ensure adequate compliance.
