A 17-year old housemaid, Miss Kemi Seun, has been arrested and charged for allegedly stealing her madam’s N11.2m jewelries two months after she was engaged and brought to Lagos State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Akano Ohafia Street, Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos, where her boss, Oluyemi Naomi, resides.
According to the Police, on 29th June, 2023, the housemaid conspired with others now at large, broke into the madam’s bedroom, carted away her gold jewelries worth the said amount and sold them.
However, when the victim searched where she kept those items and did not find them, she asked the housemaid, who claimed that she did not know anything about it whereas she was the only in the house when the incident happened.
The matter was reported to the Police at Ago Palace Way Division. The housemaid was arrested and detained for interrogation.
While being interrogated, she reportedly admitted to have conspired with others now at large to steal the items. But she declined to reveal the identity of those she conspired with to steal the items or where they sold them.
The Police found her culpable and subsequently charged her before the Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
She pleaded not guilty when she was arraigned.
The prosecutor, Supol Thomas Nurudeen, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. P.E. Nwaka, granted her bail in the sum of N500,000 with four sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre pending when she will perfect her bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 21st August, 2023, for mention.
